In Praise of Mothers

Estimated reading time:  45 seconds

Happy (Belated) Mothers Day!

This post is dedicated to my late mother Frances Halpern, of blessed memory, who passed away at age 82 in 2007 after many years of failing health.

A strong and proud woman, she lived a challenging and difficult life without complaint.

The major turning point in our family occurred in 1974 when my late father, of blessed memory, died of a sudden heart attack at age 50.

At the time I was just 11 years old (with 3 older brothers), and I still remember the shock and how our lives changed forever.

We faced some big financial challenges just paying the bills and putting food on the table with no life insurance, no will and no savings to speak of.

Following a hiatus of more than 20 years, my Mom at age 48 was forced to re-join the workforce to support us.

Her stenographic skills got her a job working downtown for an Ontario government agency.

She left the house by 7am every morning for the long commute downtown by public transit, returning at supper time.  It was a tough grind for a young widow.

So even though I have been in the insurance and estate planning profession for almost 25 years, my real start in this profession actually dates back to those events of 1974.

The vivid memories of what happened in my family drives my commitment to protecting clients and their families from whatever lies ahead.

I am also a realist: everybody’s busy with plenty of things to do and discussions of illness and death are usually unpleasant and uncomfortable.

It’s no wonder that people prefer to discuss a favourite new restaurant or vacation spot…it is way more fun.

I’ve learned that most people have 3 key questions and they just want honest answers:

1   Will my family be okay financially if I get sick or die?

2    When can I stop working if I don’t have to?

3    Will my family inherit a mess and will the tax department get a lot of their money?

In honour of Mothers Day, please set aside some time to get your own answers to these important questions.

If you haven’t done so already, get some peace of mind right now by downloading and completing the free Estate Planning Toolkit available here at my website.

The Toolkit now consists of 4 elements :

Estate Directory

Estate Planning Checklist

Executor Duties Checklist

Business Owners Planning Guide
