Mark Halpern, CFP, TEP, MFA-P
CEO and Founder, WEALTHinsurance.com®
Less Tax. More Legacy.™
When Mark was eleven, his father died unexpectedly of a heart attack, at age 50. Mark and his family were left with nothing. The elder Halpern had done little planning, there was no will and there was no life insurance.
Through his grief, Mark was affected profoundly – in a positive way. “I had to develop the ‘struggle muscle.’ It’s very positive in that you become resourceful and are always thinking about how to make things happen. It also made me much more aware of the limited time we have to do good in this world, how to fix what may be lacking in the world, and using our life experience to fuel it.”
Forty years later, Mark is recognized as one of Canada’s top experts and thought leaders in using life insurance to preserve wealth and leaving a legacy. His advisory work has resulted in more than 60 Canadian charities receiving more than $100 million since 2020 made up of current donations and legacy gifts. He has also inspired thousands of advisors and Canadians on how to leave legacies to their loved ones – in sums far greater than otherwise, using Mark’s knowledge around the intersection of tax minimization, life insurance and strategic philanthropy.
He pursues three visions:
· Transform Canadian philanthropy by inspiring advisors, charities and donors to think differently about the most effective ways to preserve wealth and leave a legacy.
· Create $1-Billion of new charity every year by working with clients, charity donors and through creating a community of 100 allied professionals, by December 31st, 2027.
· A Canada in which people not only understand what insurance is, but really understand what it does.
He is dedicated to achieving them by sharing his knowledge and collaborating with anyone who’s committed to making a difference. For example, his mentoring/coaching Power of Platinum™ program with Jim Ruta helps other advisors become experts on tax minimization using philanthropy and life insurance.
He is also Chair of the Professional Advisors Council at Humber River Hospital Foundation, a Trustee and former Chair of the Professional Advisory Committee at the Jewish Foundation of Greater Toronto, and a member of: the Professional Advisors Council at SickKids Foundation; the Promise Legacy Council at St. Joseph’s Hospital Foundation; the Professional Advisor Task Force at St. Michael’s Hospital Foundation; the Planned Giving Advisory Committee at TVOntario; the Toronto Estate Planning Council; the Society of Trust & Estate Practitioners (STEP); the Canadian Association of Gift Planners (CAGP); and the Conference for Advanced Life Underwriting (CALU).
Outside of business, Mark loves to learn (3 hours per day), volunteer and teaches weekly leadership and ethics classes. He has been married to Rhonda for 28 years and they are kept busy with their five children. Mark is guided by his Jewish faith, including it’s belief that if we don’t use our G-d given talents, we are not achieving what we came here to accomplish.
